The Language without Words

As I sat waiting in a reception area yesterday, I observed a young boy playing on his dad’s phone. He was probably 6 or 7 years old. He had a sturdy build and his disheveled hair and clothes had a “take me as I am” kind of vibe. He also had what I refer to as “squooshy energy”. It’s the same vibe you get when a loving grandmother offers you cookies and milk. You just want to absorb kindness like that. This kid had that vibe.

I smiled when he giggled out loud at whatever he was watching on the phone. I chuckled when I heard him say, “why are the goldfish so fat?” as he pressed his finger against the glass of the aquarium in the reception area (the fish weren’t actually goldfish but after he said it, that’s exactly what they reminded me of, too).

As he got up to leave the reception area he walked past me. He didn’t acknowledge me nor did he seem to care that I was even there. I continued on scrolling through my phone and contemplating my day. Then, in the most unexpected way, the little boy stopped, turned around, and gave me with the biggest, squooshiest hug he could muster.

I was in disbelief at first, but that instantly faded as I felt my entire frequency lift. Did he know my challenges from the day? Did he sense my need for kindness? You bet he did. And in the purity of his heart, he extended kindness to me expecting nothing in return.

I thanked him for his wonderful hug and he went on his way. I went on my way, too, but much brighter and definitely more thankful.

Whether it’s a hug, a smile, or a word of positivity, I hope you receive a dose of kindness today from the squooshiest energy around.
